I’m a sucker for unique vintage pieces and this week’s project is certainly that. I’ve seen a few of these art deco buffets come up for sale over the years but I haven’t been able to find out much about this style. If you know anything about them – please share in the comments below!

The before
This vintage beauty is made of maple and we knew we wanted to keep some of the gorgeous wood visible. It’s always a great debate between us – how much wood to keep and how much to paint. Since it’s a lot easier to add paint if it’s not enough rather than remove it, we start with only a few areas and see how it looks as we go.
We guessed pretty well this time and painted only the frame. But because some extra holes had been drilled under the original hardware, we opted to also add a midnight blue stripe to cover our repairs to the wood doors.
The process
One of my favorite paint colors to pair with wood tones is navy blue. We used Fusion’s midnight blue on this piece. I LOVE this color! It is darker than a traditional navy (such as my go to Benjamin Moore color Hale Navy). But the darkness adds such a rich feel when paired with wood.
It only took two coats of midnight blue to get full, glorious coverage. You just can’t beat mineral paint!
To kick this piece up a notch, I chose a bold floral print wrapping paper to line the walls and shelves of the buffet. That’s right, you read that correctly, wrapping paper!
We know wallpaper is a popular choice for accenting furniture but to be honest, we find it difficult to find reasonably priced wallpaper locally. And you usually have to buy it by the roll. If you’re anything like me, you don’t want to use the same paper over and over again on furniture. Why pay for so much paper you’ll never use?
We solve this problem by using GOOD QUALITY wrapping paper on our projects. This particular paper is nice and think and I picked it up from Papyrus for just over $10 Canadian. The leftover bits will be wrapping a birthday present for my daughter’s friend this weekend. Win-win!
You can read more about how we apply wrapping paper to furniture here.
We really loved the color of the wood so all we did was fresh it up with hemp oil. We kept the original hardware, which we scrubbed with our go-to Bar Keepers Friend.
The after
This art deco buffet is a playful beauty ready to be the star of the party. I totally see it as a drinks station for fun gatherings in a vibrant, personality filled home. Am I the only one who envisions the future of furniture? Maybe don’t answer that…We’d love to hear what you think of the transformation of this art deco buffet in the comments below!
