We found this sweet little guy on the curb on the way home from Sunday night family dinner. It was one of those pieces we picked up but didn’t really get around to making plans for it. Well it’s time has come. We picked up a can of pale yellow latex paint from the mistint bin at our local home improvement store and we wanted to try it out on something! Time for a sunny makeover.
The table was in relatively good condition so we didn’t need to do any repairs. We removed the hardware, sanded it down and used our technique for achieving a near perfect paint finish which you can read about here.
After the paint was dry, the table was cute but its details didn’t stand out. We decided to distress it slightly using sandpaper and antique wax to give the piece some age and character. Can you use wax with latex paint? The answer is YES! It doesn’t seep into the paint the same way it does with chalk paint, but it will adhere with no problems and give you the aged look you’re after.
We only wanted to use a small amount of the wax to add that aged look it. We made sure to seal the piece first (we used polycrylic spray but you could also use a clear wax coat and let it dry).
This was our first time using Behr antiquing wax. I’m pleased to report it is very soft and pliable. It went on very smoothly. In fact, it was so pliable, when we tried to wipe it right away, it all came off. We tried waiting a few minutes, then buffing, and that seemed to leave behind just the right amount of wax.
Tip: make sure you use a lint free cloth to remove or buff your wax. You don’t want to get little hairs and fibers sticking to your finish!
We only gave the hardware a light clean because we wanted to keep the patina to complement the aged look. For a little table rescued from the curb, this sunny makeover turned out very nicely. What do you think of this furniture flip? We’d love for you to leave us a comment below.
